Doctrine & Covenants 18:15
And if it so be that you should labor all your days in crying repentance unto this people, and bring, save it be one asoul unto me, how great shall be your joy with him in the kingdom of my Father!
Ciao a tutti (March 16)
So as I think all of you know I am no longer on my mission due to some health issues. I have been home a week today! Things are going okay. My health still isn't back to normal but we are working on it! I am loving being home, though I miss the mission beyond words! It is a very different life out here haha. But I just wanted to update everyone and tell you thank you for all the support and love and letters during my mission! All of you were lights during some dark times for me, so thank you for being there for me!! I have decided that I am still going to keep bearing my testimony even though I don't have a tag anymore, so you can hop on over to wininrome.blogspot.com if you still want to keep hearing from me! The mission doesn't end when we are home, that is for sure :)
I loved my mission. I learned more than I ever thought I would. I felt God's love for me for the first time in my life and it changed me, inside and out. I know he is real and he has a very specific wonderful plan for each of us and even when things don't go the way we expected or even wanted, he blesses us for our faithfulness and he never gives up on us. And when we need to change, or have the courage to change, he can give that to us. And we don't have to be scared, of anything, anymore. We just have to remember he's got this. He will never leave us. He loves us no matter what we have done or what we didn't do. And he loves us just because he can. And I know there are always far greater things ahead than any we leave behind!! All the heartbreaks are worth it, all the disappoints and rejections and feeling inadequate is all worth it because he compensates us. He doesn't just give up on us. He is always there.
Hope to keep hearing from you guys.

"Hannah's condition (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) is very debilitating. She is not eating enough to stay here much longer without doing physical damage to her body. She has excruciating abdominal pain after she eats...
We are picking Hannah up at the SLC airport tonight. The Rome Mission is sending her home. Her health has become unmanageable. We estimate that she has likely lost about 25 lbs. while serving there. Here is what her mission has told us:
As I have worked with missionaries I have become aware that the Lord calls them on their missions and He releases them from their missions when He chooses. That means they serve at His pleasure and for as long as He determines they should serve -- six months or a year or 18 months or 24 months...
For Hannah, the last three or four months of her mission have been almost unbearable and yet they have been months when she has been her strongest best self. Although she was suffering, her attitude was positive and kind...
I have so much respect for your daughter. She is becoming a wonderful woman. I anticipate that she will just continue to develop a stronger depth of character. She is very capable, strong, determined and gentle. I have enjoyed knowing her. I am sure you are very proud of her. You have good reason to be proud. Enjoy her..."
We are overjoyed and way excited to be reunited with her tonight, at the end of these long 12 months. Any of you who would like to come to the airport are welcome to meet us at the bottom of the escalators at 9:00pm.
We anticipate that she will give a homecoming report within the next few weeks. We will let you know when that is.
Miraculously, she will fly in about 13 hours before one of her best friend's weddings. If she's well enough, we will attend Bekah's wedding in the Manti Temple tomorrow.
Thank you so much for your understanding and loving support. You're the best!
Love,
Dave, Angie & Family

Appendix Out (Feb. 21)
From Sister Sprague, a Senior Couple Missionary serving in Rome:
"My husband and I, the Sprague's from Kaysville, Utah are Sr couple missionaries. We are in the hospital with your darling daughter, and her companion. She came in last night due to pain, they did a blood test and kept her overnight with antibiotics in an IV. She felt a little better but was still in pain. The Dr checked her and felt like it was her appendix. She had the option to wait until tomorrow or do the surgery today. And she chose to do it today. She went in at 1:00 pm, they took her appendix out and she was back in her room at 3:00.
It is now 6:30 pm. I was not able to send this email before because I didn't have internet so that is why it is kind of a hour by hour update. So the long story short is that the doctor said her appendix needed to be removed, no other problems found.
I hope you know all is well, the hospital is better quality because it is a private hospital not a social one. We know it is a little scary to have your daughter in a hospital in a foreign country thousands of miles away, but we hope you know that she is in good hands and in good care!! We will continue to check up on her and hope you know that she is being watched over by Heavenly Father!!! If you have any questions we would be happy to try to answer them."
Hannah's Mom received this Feb. 23:

You Have Christ. (Feb. 20)
7 (For we walk by faith, not by sight:)
17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
20 Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God.
- 2 Corinthians 5: 7, 17, 20
10 As sorrowful, yet alway rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things.
-2 Corinthians 6:10
This week has been quite a rollercoaster!!! But I know, despite the downs, that there will always be ups. And the downs are what make us appreciate those ups. And I know that even though things are not are way, we can be happy because they are God's way snd when we are being righteous we can enjoy the blessings he gives us for following him. And he has a much more beautiful imagination than any of us. So I know he makes the outcome of all things more beautiful than we could have ever believed them to be.
I think that it is important to remember that if we expect God to forget us not, we need to remember to forget Him not, to remember that in times of trial or disappointment or hard times in general, if we choose to exclude him from the equation he will be excluded. But if we ask for his help he will gladly give it. I have witnessed that this week and it has been much more peaceful when I have asked him to take the things I cannot carry.
We got a miracle referral named Georgia from a member and she is pregnant and awesome and I hope more comes soon with her!
Miracles happen, even when we forget that they do. We must always remind ourselves that life is divine, God always has a way of helping us remember that we aren't just people. But we are his sons and daughters. And things are of great importance here on earth to help us prepare for the next. And I know as we are faithful and as we give him our hearts and forget and forgive the things and people we cannot change, Including ourselves, we can truly live.
I was studying a little about mercy the other day. And it was from a. Discorso by President Uchtdorf that talks about the merciful receive mercy. So if we expect mercy for ourselves we must be ready to give mercy to others. We have to remember we are all on different planes and we are all not meant to live the exact same life. We have different strengths and weaknesses and it is beautiful that way. But we also need to be patient with ourselves.
A sorella a few weeks ago asked me what I had learned the most on my mission so far, and immediately the response that came out of my mouth was " I expect a lot more out of myself than what God expects out of me". And it is true. Our own expectations for ourselves can be our downfall. All God asks is that we keep the commandments and continue to do our best to try to keep being perfected. Perfection isn't a one time deal. It is something we will try and fail at time and again in this life, until finally we will have reached that level of completeness AFTER this life. What we can do now is cherish the imperfections. In ourselves, in others, in everything. We can love even though we are not completed yet. We can embrace the in-between. We can remember that God loves us and all he asks is that we keep trying. Trying to be His. Trying to love better, trying to be better, trying to forgive more and let go. I think it is in the phase of trying that we then somehow find ourselves with success. Because you cannot obtain success just from one try. That was then just a lucky shot. But really. No one has ever found success without failure except the Savior. And because of Him, no failure we have ever has to be forever! We can wake up the next day and fix it and be better. Just because we messed up before doesn't mean we have to mess up again!
Sometimes it feels like we have nothing. But really, we have all things, because we have the knowledge of the love of our Savior and our infinitely kind Heavenly Father. And there love makes up for whatever else we are lacking in our lives.
And oh, how that love has changed my life. I would be lying if I ever said it was easy, even if a single day was easy. But it is so much more worth it because it is difficult. Because then that means it matters. Because we can hold it precious to us, the thing that was so difficult and strenuous to acquire. And that is my testimony of my Savior's love for me. It almost seems incredulous to think that he could love me when I am not at my happiest, my fullest capacity, or finding a ton of worldly success and pleasing everyone around me. But luckily all of that is what Satan wants us to think is happiness. No success in the world can ever compete with spiritual failure. And no failure in the world can compete with any spiritual success. :) just remember there is always hope. And always a father who is so eager to listen to us, help us, bless us, and smile down at us with tiny beautiful precious miracles. Life is truly about the small things! So embrace them and keep going and remember that whatever way you think you have failed is not the end. Through Christ we can find new life. We never have to thirst for that belonging again after we have truly found him and realized that it is impossible without him. We must keep him present during our trials and never stop seeking him. Learning of him. Acting like him. And loving Him.
Well that was long. But just remember you have Christ. And that is what matters, above all. You may not have it all together but you have Christ, and he is enough.
Bridge of angels in case you forgot.
L'autobus Miracolo (Feb. 13)
Ciao tutti,
I didn't know what else to call this email except for the bus miracle because that was definitely what it was! But first things first...
I was transferred just outside of Bella Roma to Ostia, a quaint beach side city with many pigeons and a tree in the road. I was here for a crazy week in August and I am pumped to finally be back. I love this little city! And I am just a stone's throw away from my old Roma Uno stomping grounds. My new comp is Sorella Jessie Hills and she is from New Hampshire and she is tall and nice and has a dimple too!! She's an angel :)
On my last night in Rome I was on a split with sorella Cardullo (not my comp) and we were riding the bus home together to pack because she is now in my blessed Caserta! But on the bus this woman says to me in English "I like your tag." And me being the cynic I am, thought she was being rude but I asked if she had seen it before, she said no and asked if we were students. We said no we were missionaries!! And then she asked what church, and she said she wanted to be part of whatever we were part of because she wanted her girls to grow up and be just like us. She is from India, came to Rome because of an arranged marriage, but is now a single mom. And she invited us back to her apartment that second and gave us about five juice boxes each and just told us how she wanted her girls to be good. It was so CUtE. And then we showed her 'grazie a lui' which she recognized from having seen on facebook!!! (Good job techies, keep sharing the good word on cyber space!!!) and she cried!!! And we left. But then my peeps in Rome one said she came to church!!! And cried the whole time!!! I am so happy for her and I hope she has a miraculous time!!!! There are still good people in the world and the gospel is still true and God still lives!!!
Never stop fighting the bad and remember good will always win! We know how this ends, and Christ is always the answer. He will never be too simple.
36 Yea, and cry unto God for all thy support; yea, let all thy doings be unto the Lord, and whithersoever thou goest let it be in the Lord; yea, let all thy thoughts be directed unto the Lord; yea, let the affections of thy heart be placed upon the Lord forever.
37 Counsel with the Lord in all thy doings, and he will direct thee for good; yea, when thou liest down at night lie down unto the Lord, that he may watch over you in your sleep; and when thou risest in the morning let thy heart be full of thanks unto God; and if ye do these things, ye shall be lifted up at the last day.- Alma 37:36-37

"Therefore, I will Glory in my infirmities" (Feb. 6)
Cari miei,
È stata una settimana bella come sempre!!
I think this week what I learned the most was from President Uchtdorf's definition of pride. He says:
Pride exaggerates its own strength and ignores the virtues of others.
I think that is one of the best definitions of pride I have heard so far. Because it is true. When we think we can do it all ourself, we think we are stronger than God has made us to be and we defy him the opportunity to extend a hand of grace toward us.
But I think the other part has hit me really hard too. I think it is very important we are working to praise and compliment the virtues of others, because when we do so, we help them recognize those virtues and those talents. Because what does it hurt telling someone they are good at something? And helping them see that there is good in them too? I don't think we do it enough as people. Thanking the people we love and praising them for their virtues.
And with that I think that I have learned a ton about being grateful for weakness. Because weakness gives God an opportunity to fix us. And to help us find gioia vera.
Man's extremity is God's opportunity. -Jeffrey R. Holland
I've been really tried this transfer but I've never been happier. I have found when I accept and listen to the plans and ideas God has for me about who he wants me to become, I find a true sense of peace. Because as I lose myself in God, I find myself becoming someone I never thought I could become without the help of my savior. In fact, it's all because of him I've even made it this far. And it will always be because of him. It's all about Him, actually. It's never about us.
And celebrating Him, searching Him, and becoming his true friend is what brings me joy everyday. It's simple through Him. And so much more profoundly important when we remember that He is the only thing that matters. Because He can truly save us. Day after day. Week after week. It's always going to be Him. The answer to every question, doubt, fear and pain. It will always be Christ.
7 And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure.
8 For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me.
9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
10 Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong. {2 Corinthians 12:7-10}

"We may not have it all together, but together we have it all" #cheesy (Jan. 30)
Cari miei,
Another week has been fulfilled! Crazy! This week we had zone conference, all about the holy
. Okay well I meant Holy Ghost but the burrito was a nice try. Really though. I do miss burritos. Comunque!! We had a lovely zone conference and it was exactly what I needed to hear! There was a part where we all shared our favorite scriptures about the Holy Ghost and I shared my mission scripture, Words of Mormon 1:7-8. But verse 7 speaks specifically about the spirit:
7 And I do this for a wise purpose; for thus it whispereth me, according to the workings of the Spirit of the Lord which is in me. And now, I do not know all things; but the Lord knoweth all things which are to come; wherefore, he worketh in me to do according to his will.
This scripture has helped me always keep in mind why I am here. Because sometimes it is easy to forget the purpose of everything we have been doing! And I honestly didn't have a specific reason for coming on this crazy Italian adventure. But I am sure glad I came!! And I have seen so many reasons why unfold from it that are so so special to me. I have learned that without the spirit we cannot do anything of worth! The spirit is what calms our hearts and helps us know we are going to be okay!!! This is how they described the comforter in that conference:
He is the comforter (John 14:26) as the soothing voice of a loving parent can quiet a crying child, the whisperings of the spirit can calm your fears, hush the nagging worries of your life, and comfort you when you grieve.
I love that. And I know it's true! The Holy Ghost was sent because Christ cannot always be right here with us to comfort us, so he sent the spirit to be able to convey the same comforts he would give us if he was here. And I know it is a true manifestation of his love for us, when we feel his love. But the spirit can only carry that love to our hearts. We have to choose to let it in, and soften our hard heart and calm our fears.
I love hearing from all of you and I'm glad for the readers who are still hanging on :) know that Heavenly Father loves you more than you can comprehend. That there is a life after this one. And when it seems like the end, know there is always a light. And always a solution. A way out. There is no such thing as too far gone.

Here Is My Heart (Jan. 23)
Buon giorno belli!!
This week has been the most sacred week of my mission, and probably my entire life. I have a true sense of what it means to have had a change of heart and it has changed my life. It has changed me. And the best way I can describe it is to invite you all to read a few of the lyrics of Come Thou Fount Of Every Blessing. And I wish you all the best week and know that God's grace is sufficient for those that love him and that means you!!!
Here I raise my ebenezer
Hither by thy help I've come
And I hope by thy good pleasure
Safely to arrive at home.
Oh to grace how great a debtor
Daily I'm constrained to be
Let that grace, now like a fetter
Bind my wandering heart to thee
Prone to wander lord I feel it
Prone to leave the God I love
Here's my heart o take and seal it
Seal it for thy courts above.

After All We Can Do (Jan. 16)
This week was many ups and downs and roller coasters like always. But really I just wanted to share a few parts of a talk I read this morning.
If you’re seeing more of your weaknesses, that just might mean you’re moving nearer to God, not farther away.
This earth is not our home. We are away at school, trying to master the lessons of “the great plan of happiness” so we can return home and know what it means to be there.
I love that. We are just on earth away at school, learning. It's ok if we mess up, if we fail, if we are homesick for a better world, if we feel lost, broken, hurt, or simply alone. It could be because this isn't our home. We miss the glory we used to know, the brightness we used to have. But we never had joy. Not before. And now we have the opportunity to find it. To feel it and never lose it.
I know that joy is real. I know that god is real and loves us beyond our wildest dreams. I know that hope can make us feel invincible even when we aren't. And I know with all my heart that there are second chances and third and fourth and fifth.
I know that Christ is real and his grace is enough if we just accept it and let it cover us. It is dear. Sublime. Wonderful.
And it's ok to not be okay. And it's also okay to just be okay.
But keep going. Wherever you are on the spectrum of believing, keep going. Don't stop. Don't pretend like you don't have it in you. You do. It's there. Just keep your chin up and run until you're past the finish line. Remember all the people who love you because you are just you.
Remember that God, your father, is sitting by the window, waiting for you to come home from school. He doesn't expect perfect grades. Just that you did all you could and you felt as much as you could feel.
6 And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work. Romans 11:6

But How Could He Love a Heart Like Mine? (Jan.9)
Ciao tutti,
This week was a week of miracles and changes and interesting things. A lot of prayers answered and stretching and growing, like always ;)
It's been really been our aim this transfer to get to know our blessed members better. They really bring so much light and so much commitment to this world, it's wonderful. We were able to visit quite a few members this week, and to see their eagerness and desire to do missionary work was wonderful! They're so in gamba it's awesome.
This week one of my goals was to "love my weaknesses" this week, because I have been thinking about how it is easy to love ourselves when it comes to the things we are good at. When we are succeeding it's easy to keep going on, to not have to be motivated to continue, and just keep breezing right along. But when it comes to our weaknesses, suddenly it becomes hard to love ourselves again. But why? We know we are human we know we are weak. But maybe it's because we are trying to overcome them alone. Maybe we are seeing our weaknesses without adding Christ's ability to change them into strengths, talents even, and that's why we suddenly find those pieces of ourselves hard to love.
I haven't been enjoying the work as much as I would like to this week, and I realized it was because I was focusing on all the things that don't matter, the things I can't control, instead of focusing on the one thing that does matter. Or more, the one person who makes it matter.
I have been forgetting to seek Christ, to seek my beloved savior, instead of getting sidetracked by the things the world wants me to believe are important. I've been forgetting the heart of it all, which is Him.
And when I finally realized this, it helped me find joy in being weak. In not being able to do it all myself. Because he was there, lifting me. And it gave him a chance to help me. I began to start giving him a chance to fix me again. And it made me finally realize that not having it all together is the part where you can finally realize what truly matters in your life. That's when you can begin to feel peace. The kind of peace that comes from realizing its okay not to be okay, because Christ can help us when we aren't okay. He can pick up the pieces when we can't. He can turn things back around. He can help us remember how to be happy. How to love ourselves again.
I know that things can seem dark and they are. I know it can seem endless, but there is an end. And if we trust him, he can carry us to it. He can help us believe in second chances, in fresh starts again. He can help us remember that its about who we are becoming and not about who we were.
Vi voglio bene
We Can Choose Him, or We Can Choose Us (Jan.2)
Cari miei,
This week was a wonderful week of miracles. And now it has officially started off as a miraculous year.
It is a new year and with the new year can come a new you. One of my New Year's Resolutions is to keep Christ at the center of my life even after I return home from my mission. One way that I am going to try to do this, is by becoming His friend. I was reading a discorso but I can't remember which one, and it was talking about what Christ will see you as when you meet Him again. Will he see you as a disciple- as his true friend? His disciples were his closest colleagues, his closest friends. And I know what I want most in life is to be a friend to Christ.
The theme for Christmas of light the world or sii una luce is still something we can do everyday. We can still reach outward everyday of the year and not just during the holidays. I know that a resolution this year could be to continue to try every day to be a light for someone else, and to fight that dark away.
I know that when we use God's strength instead of our own we can truly see miracles in our lives.
13 And because of this their great wickedness, and their boastings in their own strength, they were left in their own strength; therefore they did not prosper, but were afflicted and smitten, and driven before the Lamanites, until they had lost possession of almost all their lands.-Helaman 4:13
